As I’m writing this, our country is in the midst of COVID-19 prevention measures. Many of us are operating in survival mode and the thought of being happy and healthy seems out of reach. I really believe if you incorporate these 5 things into your daily routine that you will find you can actually thrive during these challenging times.
1. Exercise and Eat Healthy. Exercise is not only good for our physical health but it helps to release endorphins (hormones released within the brain and nervous system) that help to control our mood. Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Regular exercise also helps us sleep better. 2. Make Phone Calls. While at home, make time to call friends and loved ones so you can feel connected. We’re so used to texting we often forget we can actually call and technology makes it even easier to video chat so you can feel even more of a human connection. Especially when you feel yourself having a hard day, pick up the phone and check in with a loved one. A fun chat is always good for the soul.
3. Stick With A Routine. Being stuck at home makes it even more important to stick with a normal routine. Set an alarm so you can wake up at a close to regular time. Throw on some workout clothes and push play on an energizing workout. Shower and get dressed. When you look better you feel better. Have a list of things you want to accomplish so you can feel productive and maintain a sense of normalcy.
4. Get Outside. If at all possible, get outside and into nature. Go for a peaceful walk or hike, enjoy your morning coffee out on the porch and watch the birds playfully start their day, get up a little earlier and watch the sun rise. Vitamin D is crucial for a healthy immune system so make time to soak up a few minutes of sunshine.
5. Prayer. Studies show that regular prayer can reduce stress and anxiety levels by 79%. We can’t always control our circumstances so it’s important to have a strong faith and prayer practice. When we feel out of control, it’s important to talk to the One who is always in control. Make reading your Bible a daily non-negotiable. Keep a journal with your Bible and write down a prayer for the day, let God know what He can help you with and trust Him fully with your struggles and burdens. Never doubt how deeply He cares about you.
I want to leave you with a word of encouragement and a scripture in this season you are facing with having to be home more than normal; God is with you. You can without hesitation rely on Him fully and believe in the goodness of His word. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
